In October 1980 James Hoskins took over a local news station armed with multiple weapons after taking a newscaster hostage. While he was there he used the opportunity to record a message about his motivations, although they appeared inconsistent. He claimed that he was making a stand about violence against the poor by police, inviting the police to come in and gun him down. However, over the course of the ‘interview’ Hoskins revealed that he had actually shot and killed his girlfriend earlier in the day, and would rather be gunned down by police than face a prison sentence.
In the end none of the hostages were harmed, and before police got an opportunity to arrest him Hoskins sat himself down in the studio on the newscasters chair, put a gun to his head and fired a single shot, killing himself.
